One more year we join the Digital Preservation Coalition's initiative to celebrate the World Digital Preservation Day. This year the central theme to reflect on is "Digital Preservation: A Concerted Effort".

At LIBNOVA we firmly believe that a successful digital preservation project is the result of a joint effort between the institution and the provider, which is why we have always advocated a project approach based on cooperation, with the needs of our customers as the driving force for innovation and by engaging in collaborative research projects. But, what does this really mean?

Partnership approach

Taking a digital preservation project forward is more complex than it may initially appear. In addition to being clear about the organization's needs and finding the digital preservation tool that best meets those needs, it is necessary to have the support of the organization at the executive level in terms of commitment, budget, and implementation time, as well as the stakeholders that will be involved.

LIBNOVA has always strived to facilitate this work, so since our inception our approach to projects has been siding with the customer from even before starting a project, being one more of his team, solving the problems that arise jointly, whether technical or bureaucratic, and learning from them in each implementation to continuously improve.

Customer-driven innovation

Historically, one of the biggest challenges for LIBNOVA has been to break down digital preservation technology barriers and reduce the complexity of preservation systems by making them easy to use and, following good digital preservation practices, to achieve the highest level of digital preservation (NSDA 4/4) with a basic knowledge of digital preservation and a low learning curve.

To achieve this, the needs of our customers, and therefore of the digital preservation community, have always been at the forefront of our minds. Our main goal is that the preservation system allows them to do more with less and in a simple way, so we are constantly optimizing processes and we are more than open to make integrations with other platforms in the digital preservation ecosystem and incorporate functionalities to facilitate the day-to-day work of the information professionals.

Collaborative research projects

Frequently, the answers to a problem can be found in the community. In many occasions, our customers face similar challenges among them and, although for some of them they are new, others have already gone through them, so individual experiences sometimes meet collective needs.

However, sometimes the challenges that arise are new to the community, or require new approaches. This constant search for new solutions led LIBNOVA, in 2017, to materialize its commitment to R&D in a new department that manages the company's lines of research and technological innovation: LIBNOVA Labs. Its commitment to research and development has led LIBNOVA to be recognized with the Innovative SME Seal by the Spanish Government, to participate in international research projects, and to appear on the map of Artificial Intelligence.

ARCHIVER Project has been one of the most relevant research projects in which we have participated. Its challenge was to find a solution for the need of preserving research datasets on a Petabyte scale, driven by cutting edge research institutions worldwide led by CERN. LIBNOVA created an international public-private collaborative consortium with experts in digital preservation, data privacy, infrastructure and cybersecurity, and whose work, in addition to winning the competitive process, resulted in a new product line focused on digital preservation and research data management, and has had a direct impact on streamlining and refining our complete digital preservation platform.

All these progress and innovations in favor of information security and with the customer's needs at the center, have pushed LIBNOVA to have a strong presence in the academic, cultural and research sector in more than 20 countries in the 5 continents. Great examples are the British Library, the National Library of Spain, the University of Oxford, HILA Stanford University, BAYER, the American University in Cairo (Egypt), the University of Amsterdam, the United States Holocaust Museum (USHMM) in Washington or the Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore, which have trusted in the LIBNOVA digital preservation solutions.

Aunar esfuerzos, apuesta segura en preservación digital

Un año más nos unimos a la iniciativa de la Digital Preservation Coalition para celebrar el Día Mundial de la Preservación Digital. Este año el tema central sobre el que reflexionar es “Preservación Digital: Un esfuerzo conjunto” “Digital Preservation: A Concerted Effort”.

En LIBNOVA creemos firmemente que un proyecto exitoso de preservación digital es el resultado del esfuerzo conjunto entre la institución y el proveedor, por eso siempre hemos defendido un enfoque de proyecto basado en la cooperación, con las necesidades de nuestros clientes como motor de innovación y volcándonos en proyectos de investigación colaborativos. Pero, ¿qué significa esto?

Enfoque asociativo

Sacar un proyecto de preservación digital adelante es más complejo de lo que inicialmente puede parecer, además de tener claras las necesidades de la organización y buscar la herramienta de preservación digital que mejor resuelva esas necesidades, es necesario contar con el apoyo de la organización a nivel ejecutivo en cuanto a compromiso, presupuesto, y tiempo de ejecución, así como los actores que van a participar.

LIBNOVA ha tratado siempre de facilitar esa labor, por eso, nuestro enfoque en los proyectos siempre ha sido ponernos del lado del cliente desde incluso antes de comenzar un proyecto, siendo uno más de su equipo, solucionando los inconvenientes que van surgiendo de forma conjunta, sean técnicos o burocráticos, y aprendiendo de ellos en cada implementación para seguir mejorando.

Innovación impulsada por las necesidades del cliente

Uno de los mayores retos de LIBNOVA ha sido, desde siempre, derribar las barreras tecnológicas de la preservación digital y restar complejidad a los sistemas de preservación, haciendo que sean fáciles de utilizar y que, siguiendo las buenas prácticas de preservación digital, permitan alcanzar el máximo nivel de preservación digital (NSDA 4/4), con unos conocimientos básicos de preservación digital y una baja curva de aprendizaje.

Para ello siempre hemos tenido en cuenta las necesidades de nuestros clientes, y, por tanto, de la comunidad de la preservación digital. Nuestro principal objetivo es que el sistema de preservación les permita hacer más con menos y de forma sencilla, por eso estamos continuamente optimizando los procesos y estamos abiertos a realizar integraciones con otras plataformas del ecosistema de la preservación digital e incorporar funcionalidades faciliten el trabajo del día a día de los profesionales de la información.

Proyectos de investigación colaborativos

La mayoría de las veces, las respuestas a un problema están en la comunidad. En muchas ocasiones, nuestros clientes se enfrentan a retos similares entre ellos y, aunque para unos son nuevos, otros ya han transitado por ellos, por lo que las experiencias individuales en ocasiones satisfacen las necesidades colectivas.

En cambio, hay ocasiones en las que los retos que se plantean son nuevos para la comunidad, o necesitan nuevos enfoques. La búsqueda constante de nuevas soluciones llevó a LIBNOVA, en 2017, a materializar su apuesta por la I+D+i en un nuevo departamento que gestiona las líneas de investigación e innovación tecnológica de la compañía: LIBNOVA Labs. Esta apuesta por la investigación y el desarrollo ha llevado a LIBNOVA a ser reconocida con el Sello de PYME Innovadora por el Gobierno de España, a participar en proyectos de investigación internacionales, y a aparecer en el mapa de la Inteligencia Artificial.

Uno de los proyectos de investigación más relevantes en los que hemos participado ha sido el Proyecto ARCHIVER, cuyo reto era dar solución a la necesidad de preservar los datos de investigación a escala de Petabytes. Impulsado por instituciones de investigación punteras a nivel mundial lideradas por el CERN, LIBNOVA creó un consorcio colaborativo internacional público-privado con expertos en preservación digital, protección de datos, infraestructuras y ciberseguridad, cuyo trabajo, además de resultar ganador del proceso competitivo, dio como resultado una nueva línea de producto enfocada en la preservación digital y gestión de datos de investigación, y ha repercutido directamente en la optimización de nuestra plataforma de preservación digital.

Todos estos avances e innovaciones en favor de la seguridad de la información y con las necesidades del cliente como centro, han llevado a LIBNOVA a tener una fuerte presencia en el sector académico, cultural y de investigación en más de 20 países en los 5 continentes. Buenos ejemplos de ello son la Biblioteca Británica, la Biblioteca Nacional de España, la Universidad de Oxford, HILA Stanford University, BAYER, la American University in Cairo (Egipto), la Universidad de Ámsterdam, el Museo del Holocausto de Estados Unidos (USHMM) en Washington o la Universidad Politécnica de Temasek en Singapur.
