Role Description:

Applications are invited for the role of Technology Strategy Leader in the Library & Archives.

You will be the lead developer in a team which maintains and enhances the systems that support the services of Library & Archives. The main systems managed by the team are:

  • York Digital Library (open source Fedora with custom interface, moving to Hydra-based interface)

  • Library Management System (Ex Libris Alma) and YorSearch, our search and discovery service (Ex Libris Primo) -  both cloud hosted;

  • AtoM Archives Management System (open source)

You will play an important role in helping to shape the vision and direction of our digital repository infrastructure and services.  Our digital repository is currently branded as York Digital Library and allows us to showcase ground-breaking digital archives projects which are developed in collaboration with academic and research staff.

Essential qualifications required: 

Graduate or 5 years minimum professional experience with a formal professional qualification relevant to the role (or experiential equivalent). 

You will therefore be an excellent communicator, with experience of motivating, organising and coordinating the work of a small team of developers, and be capable of gathering user requirements and needs analyses from stakeholders in order to deliver appropriate technical solutions. Your technical skills will include:

  • High level of competency in software development in Ruby and/or Java, or an allied programming language

  • Current web application development using HTML5, Javascript, CSS and Web development frameworks, eg. Rails

  • Working with and designing databases and structured data, such as SQL, RDF, XML or JSON

You will also need to have some experience of leading and managing projects, possess the ability to think strategically and be able  to demonstrate flexibility and innovation.

The role is full-time, Monday to Friday and is available immediately on an open contract. The Information Services Directorate operates a flexi-time scheme which allows for flexible working whilst ensuring operational requirements are fulfilled.
