Kew, London, UK

About the role

You'll be joining the Web Archiving Team which is responsible for archiving UK Central Government websites and social media feeds. The UK Government Web Archive (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/webarchive/) holds around 130TB of data and is growing at a rate of around 10TB each year. It contains archived versions of around 4,000 individual websites and over 100 YouTube and Twitter feeds. The public can access the web archive online free of charge.

You will support the web archiving process from beginning to end. In particular you will be responsible for undertaking quality assurance checks on archived websites.

This is an exciting time for the team as they began working with a new technical supplier earlier this year and are currently in the process of designing new work processes. You will have opportunities to contribute to this work and also to the wider work of the Digital Directorate as The National Archives works towards implementing our Digital Strategy (http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/our-role/plans-policies-performance-and-projects/our-plans/digital-strategy/).

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a small, pro-active team working in an exciting area and to make a real contribution to preserving this history of government on the web.

About you

You'll be a confident user of the internet and enthusiastic about all things digital and web based. You'll have an excellent eye for detail and the ability to describe complex issues clearly in writing. You'll be self-motivated and able to manage your own varied workload while working as part of small, busy team. You'll be keen to learn new skills and be eager to share your ideas about improving our service with other members of the team and the wider organization. You'll be prepared to represent the team on cross organization groups and at external events such as conferences.

Competencies

You'll be assessed against these competencies during the selection process:

  • Enthusiasm for all things web-based: a willingness to keep up to date with innovations in the web, developments in digital preservation and improving your own digital skills
  • Experience of digital service delivery, including an understanding of the complexities of managing, storing and giving access to data
  • Demonstrable ability to undertake repetitive tasks to a high level of accuracy
  • Excellent IT skills including proficiency in the use of MS Office, online databases, bug tracking software and an understanding of the performance of a variety of web browsers

  • Experience of contributing to the development and/or refinement of work processes
  • Demonstrable ability to work independently as well as having a proactive interest in sharing new ideas with the rest of the team
