Job Introduction 

The Technical Services team is part of BBC Archives and has a priority to make archive content available digitally by safeguarding archive assets and providing access to digital content through preservation and digitisation. The ability to do this successfully provides assurance and accessibility of the archive. 

The team consists of technical experts who design, build and implement digitisation and preservation workflows for a variety of archive collections such as AV, audio, film etc. 

The Head of Archives role is responsible for leading the team, setting digitisation and preservation strategy, project delivery and working collaboratively with D&E colleagues to secure the past for the future. 

Main Responsibilities 

  • Leading on the development of Archives strategy, and ensuring the highest standards of governance, control and compliance, and project delivery. 
  • Ensuring that Archive policies and standards remain aligned with current BBC business needs. 
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders (at all levels of the BBC and with external partners), meeting their needs and ensuring Archives is relevant, valued and highly regarded. 
  • Leading teams through the transition to a digital environment, meeting new demands with foresight and innovation, delivering new ways of working, and ensuring that best archive practice is instilled in all forms of BBC content creation. 
  • Ensuring best use of Archives resources and building high performing teams in a way that enhances the interests of BBC Archives. 
  • Measuring the effectiveness of Archive services (including setting or aligning with industry standards), as well assessing service offerings, team performance and the contribution of individual staff members, in order to determine future priorities and strategies. 
  • Ensuring excellent budgetary and financial control, to measure value for money, and to identify and implement efficiency measures. 
  • Working with content producing areas, and within the BBC Archives teams, to maximise access to digital and analogue content and develop new opportunities to support the exploitation of content. 

The Ideal Candidate 

  • A higher education qualification in Archives, Records or Information management; or extensive experience of working in Broadcast and Media Content Management. 
  • Proven ability to manage a professional service at a strategic level, leading and taking responsibility for alignment with ongoing business change. 

  •  Experience of developing high performing teams, giving clear direction and assessing performance in order to influence strategies and services. 

  • Ability to successfully initiate, influence and manage change 

  • Ability to lead key strategic projects, working successfully within a multidisciplinary teams environment)  

  • Experience of working as part of a senior management team, with high levels of credibility and a proven ability to instil confidence in senior stakeholder  

  • Excellent motivational and communication skills, and experience of presenting to large and high profile audiences.  

  • Experience developing and implementing business strategy.  

  • Extensive experience of influencing and negotiation with proven ability to successfully manage relationships within a customer environment  

  • Demonstrable subject matter expertise in Archives or Broadcast and Media Content Management.  

  • Extensive experience of managing large teams and/or budgets.  

  • Project and Change Management leadership experience.
