You will develop and deliver services and solutions for the Library’s unique collections, working with colleagues across the University Library and Collections and wider Information Services Division. With demonstrable expertise in web application development, and a desire to work with open source software, you will have a degree in a software development related subject or equivalent experience.
This post is offered on a full-time (35 hours per week), fixed-term basis for 12 months.

Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining software for Library and University Collections, supporting the ingest, storage, management, discovery, presentation, and preservation of digital content; including digital images, text, audio, video and data sets.

Qualifications and Skills
- Good degree (or equivalent qualification) in a software development related subject, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrable technical experience of web application development using Java and/or PHP.
- Experience and understanding of Object-Oriented programming.
- Knowledge and experience of developing web applications querying at least one database management system, such as Oracle, Postgres or MySQL.
- Web design experience with HTML, CSS and Javascript.
- Knowledge and understanding of the software development process lifecycle and development tools.
- Knowledge and contribution to one or more open source communities would be desirable.
- Experience of custom module development in Content Management System (CMS) such as Drupal, would be desirable.
- Linux command line familiarity.
- Ability to use effective verbal and written communication to promote innovative services.
- Good analytical and problem solving skills.
- Organisational and time management skills.
- Project Management skills are desirable.
Qualifications/Training
Essential:
Degree required (or an equivalent qualification), preferably in a software engineering, computer science or similar discipline.
Experience
Essential:
- Proven experience in the whole range of software development activities including programming, design, specification, requirements analysis, testing and configuration management.
- Demonstrable technical experience of web application development using Java and/or PHP.
- Experience defining and contributing to the technical architecture of IT systems.
- Proven experience of development applications querying a database management system, preferably either MySQL, Oracle or Postgres.
- Linux command line familiarity.
- Experience of using source control.
- Web design experience with HTML, CSS and Javascript.
- Demonstrable desire to work in an academic software development environment.
Desirable:
- Experience of working with Web Services and other web APIs.
- Examples of contributions to an open source community.
- Examples of development of custom modules within a Content Management System (CMS) such as Drupal.

Dimensions
The Library Digital Development Team works closely alongside the Programmes and Innovations (P&I) team, part of the Library and University Collections Division of Information Services. The team currently is comprised of 5 staff (including the manager). The team primarily provides development and support services to all teams within Library and University Collections.
The team provides services to approximately 40,000 staff and students of the university. Additionally many services are designed to provide worldwide access to locally held or created content.
