The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is relaunching an updated version of the Digital Preservation Business Case Toolkit to coincide with the start of a week-long Relaunch Roadshow in Australasia this week.
Focused on digital preservation activities, the Toolkit provides a guide to writing a business case and starts with factors to consider whilst planning your case, before offering templates and a step-by-step guide to drafting, construction and delivery.
“There is no perfect formula for writing a business case… as is often the case in digital preservation, it all depends on what the business case is for, who it is aimed at and how your organization wants you to present it,” explains Paul Wheatley, Head of Research and Practice for the DPC. “However, this toolkit provides a variety of practical ways to get you thinking about what makes a great business case, and how you can start to build one for your organisation.”
Originally published as part of the SPRUCE Project, this brand new version of the Toolkit was created following a book sprint in 2022 with DPC Members and Supporters.
Version 2 of the Business Case Toolkit offers existing and brand-new content in a revised structure. The resource captures and offers advice based on current experience pooled from within the DPC about what makes a good policy, understanding your organisation’s digital preservation readiness, as well as a step-by-step guide to building a business case with detailed templates. A new section on example benefits and risks for typical digital preservation business cases provides motivations for common business case targets. The toolkit also features hints and tips on writing business cases and selling your proposal to your organization, as well as other helpful resources.
The tool is freely available for anyone within the digital preservation community to use.
The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, and maintaining resources like the Digital Preservation Business Case Toolkit is just one of the ways it helps the digital preservation community around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services. The Coalition also supports its members through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
