The DPC is delighted to announce that the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) has joined the Coalition as an Associate Member. EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space, based in Darmstadt, Germany.

Due to the nature of its activities, EUMETSAT deals with very long information lifecycles. This is because of the multi-decade time spans required to develop satellites, place them into orbit and operate them, but also to understand and analyse the satellites’ data during and until long after their lifetimes. EUMETSAT needs to and is committed to protecting and preserving its information assets for as long as necessary to fulfil its organisational objectives.

“We are all very excited to join the Digital Preservation Coalition. Actually, it is our very first step in developing our capacity in this field. In the Information Management Team, we are aware of how important digital preservation is for our pledge to keep the EUMETSAT’s information assets in our realm available and accessible. Now that we decided to embark on this journey towards digital preservation, we need a compass for guidance and travel mates as allies, and we trust that DPC will help us with that.” from Gesa Büttner, Information Management Competence Area Manager at EUMETSAT.

Chair of the DPC Board, Juan Bicarregui was delighted to welcome EUMETSAT to the Coalition saying:

“EUMETSAT has an important responsibility to manage their digital assets. We look forward to working together and hope that by becoming involved in EUMETSAT’s own activities we will be able to advance our own understanding of digital preservation practice in this field.”

The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation by helping its global membership deliver resilient, long-term access to digital content. It also provides services such as community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
