The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome the University of Alberta Library as its newest Associate Member.

The University of Alberta Library (UAL) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is situated on Treaty 6 territory, traditional lands of First Nations and Métis people. In support of one of Canada’s top teaching and research universities, UAL strives to be a trustworthy partner for local, national, and international efforts to steward the scholarly record and preservation of digital content. UAL uses a variety of services, tools, and approaches to meet the digital preservation needs of the university and broader community.

The prospectus lists the DPC’s plans for 2024-2025, including the range of new publications, training, webinars and specialist briefings, and supporting resources which will be released.  It is shaped by members’ needs but is shared with the entire digital preservation community around the world, in multiple languages and in multiple time zones.

The mission of the University of Minnesota Libraries is to expand access to information, strengthen research and teaching, and enrich communities throughout the U.S. state of Minnesota, the region, and the world. Providing this level of access to the University’s collections, the Libraries team considers it essential that robust, long-term, sustainable plans are created for their care and preservation – including digital collections.

In celebration of World Digital Preservation Day 2024, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to share translations of two more Technology Watch Guidance Notes from its Data Type series: Preserving Email and Preserving Documents.

Now available in French, the Technology Watch Guidance Notes complement the DPC’s popular Technology Watch Report series. Each of the Guidance Notes in the Data Type series is designed to provide a primer on the current state of community knowledge about types of data commonly encountered by those seeking to preserve their digital assets.

The DPC has released its 2024 interim report on the Global ‘Bit List’ of Endangered Digital Species today, for World Digital Preservation Day on 7^th November.

Fundamentally, the purpose of the Bit List is advocacy, bringing attention to at-risk data and providing independently verified evidence to support action and investment. Entries are compiled by open nomination and are reviewed by the Bit List Council which is drawn from a global expert community. It represents the voice of those charged with ensuring the continuing access to digital materials beyond the limits of technical obsolescence, media degradation or organizational change.

This year, 2024, is an ‘interim’ year. Last year, the Bit List Council completed a full review resulting in the fourth revised edition (The Bit List 2023). Since then, the Council has been keeping a watching brief on the digital species to identify and record any significant innovations or aggravating factors that might affect entries. The 2024 Interim Review  synthesizes that review and offers an update on emerging risk trends.

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is pleased to announce the launch of the Digital Preservation Toolkit for Community Archives today on World Digital Preservation Day, November 7, 2024. The new resource is designed to empower community archives at every stage of their digital preservation journey.

This year's World Digital Preservation Day theme, 'Preserving Our Digital Content: Celebrating Communities', couldn't be more fitting for the toolkit's debut. It's a day that brings together digital preservation professionals worldwide to celebrate the diversity of the communities which surround and support us, whilst also drawing attention to the unique and valuable digital content which becomes their digital legacy.

“With an established DPC presence now in the Americas as well as Australasia and Asia-Pacific, and 166 members in 24 countries around the globe, this new prospectus makes a concerted commitment to the digital preservation community worldwide. Regular, thematic and returning events will be offered in various time zones, allowing participants from across different parts of the world to share the benefit of the knowledge and expertise in their own regions” says Sarah Middleton, Chief Community Officer for the DPC.
