Would you like to help preserve the UK’s digital cultural memory?

This is an exciting opportunity to help ensure that the British Library’s digital collections are preserved for future generations. As Disc Imaging Technician at the Boston Spa site in Yorkshire, you will be part of a dynamic team and work on the Flashback Project to safeguard legacy digital content acquired on handheld media. Using modern tools and workflows in a custom-built digital preservation unit, you will help rescue digital collection content stored on handheld media and transfer it to a secure environment for preservation and later access.

You will be responsible for retrieving the artefacts from stores, implementing specially designed disc imaging workflows, maintaining a registry of work completed, and for ensuring original artefacts are returned to their storage locations. You will need to deal with any errors that might arise during the process, and proactively collaborate with colleagues to refine the process as appropriate. In doing this, you will have the opportunity to learn about the Library’s digital collections first hand and the Library’s approach to dealing with the problem of maintaining access to legacy digital materials.

The post holder will need to appreciate the Library’s digital collections and be enthusiastic about the importance of digital preservation. You should be able to work methodically, logically, and independently. You should have an eye for detail, with good computing skills. Familiarity with manual handling procedures, especially for delicate materials, would be an advantage, as would an enthusiasm for legacy computers.

Interviews will take place on Monday 14 August 2017 at the British Library site in Boston Spa.
