A new day is dawning on this part of planet earth… but this day is like no other, this day is special, this day is all about digital preservation and this day is ours!

Ok, that sounded a bit full on and slightly arch-baddy, but it’s actually ALL good. All of it!

Just to prove what a dynamic, creative and inspiring community we belong to, our friends and colleagues in Asia and Australasia have kicked off the celebrations in extraordinary form! They have been doing an awesome job of celebrating on behalf of the whole community and the WDPD2018 party has been in full swing for the last 12 hours already.

World Digital Preservation Day is all about our large but dispersed community around the globe, and the work we (actually you) do to create opportunities for access and re-use. Digital preservation tends to go on behind the scenes, isn’t super glamorous, but is one of those crucial activities everyone would miss if it wasn’t happening.

Supported by digital preservation networks around the world – old friends and new – WDPD2018 is for anyone and everyone interested in securing our digital legacy.

So, here’s to digital preservation, here’s to celebrating the ordinarily uncelebrated and here’s to you!

While we’ve been snoozing, a whole pile of blog posts has been published, a 2018 update to the Bit List was released, and we can see through the Twitter and Instagram feeds that colleagues in New Zealand and Australia are clearing up after important and well-attended events.

But here in Europe, we’ve got some catching up to do. We’re just getting started! Team DPC is waking up in the Netherlands today and have a busy day ahead. But, if you’re at a loose end and you’ve got nothing planned, there are still plenty of ways to get involved:

  • Share your 'digital preservation day' on Social Media: Take a photo of your desktop; make a short video with your workmates; share updates about your own 'digital preservation day' using the social media platform of your choice. Or persuade an organization you work with to let you take over the corporate social media account for the day to talk about digital preservation. Just remember to use the hashtags #WDPD2018 so we can see what you’re up to.
  • Blogs: we’ve already heard from a whole host of clever and interesting people on the DPC blog, with more to come! But you can still blog about your day too. DPC members can share their own digital preservation stories with us by posting directly to the blog, or if you are not a member send us the link to your own blog and we’ll share the link on the WDPD2018 page.
  • Live events: There is a packed program of live events taking place around the world on the WDPD2018 page of the DPC website. If your event is not listed, send us the details and we can give them some last-minute publicity.

We’ll be attending the ‘Memory Makers: Digital Preservation Skills and How to Get Them’ Conference at Amsterdam Museum today, before we roll out the red carpet for the Digital Preservation Awards ceremony this evening.

If you can’t be here in person, we'll be streaming the whole event from 1900 CET. Make sure you visit the event page on the DPC website to watch all the glitz and glamour LIVE: https://dpconline.org/events/digital-preservation-awards

We’ve heard rumors of WDPD2018 cakes, crafts and (more?) dances, as well as policy launches and system roll-outs, and we can’t wait to see what else the day holds. However you choose to celebrate the day, don’t let us hold you back, just remember to tell us what you’re up to!
