London or Boston Spa, UK

£32,000 - £36,800 (St Pancras) £29,000 - £34,000 (Boston Spa) per annum

Fixed Term

This role is a new and exciting opportunity to help preserve the British Library’s digital collections so that they can be accessed not just today and tomorrow but far into the future, despite ongoing and inevitable changes in the technology used to deliver them. As a software tester within the digital preservation team, you will help ensure that preservation tools and software used within the Library are fit for purpose by helping to develop, maintain, and utilise a reusable, standardised testing process for tools and workflows. Working closely with other Library colleagues in both Digital Preservation and IT, you will analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of preservation tools and develop a broad understanding of the digital preservation software landscape.

The ideal candidate will have experience installing, testing and evaluating software against business and technical needs, with good software development skills across a range of programming languages. Strong research and analytical skills will help you quickly understand the scope of the preservation software domain and its needs, and help ensure you are able to maintain your awareness of any advances that may be useful to the Library. You’ll be confident working both as part of a team and independently as required. Most importantly, you should care about the longevity of the Library’s digital collections and be able to demonstrate a willingness to understand and address the technical preservation issues they face.
