Just keep the bits! A digital preservation workshop about risk management and digital preservation

Digital preservation is a complex challenge with many different facets and so many things that can go wrong! How do you design an approach to digital preservation that will meet these challenges? Or if you've already embarked on your digital preservation journey, how do you validate and fine tune what you're already doing? In short, how do you: “just keep the bits"?

This workshop will dig into the various threats our digital content faces, from technical breakdown to cyber attack. It will introduce a simple risk assessment based approach to document, analyse and offer routes to mitigate these risks, breaking the challenge down into manageable and understandable components. The workshop will take a collaborative approach and will combine an initial presentation with plenary and group based discussions and exercises.

The workshop will give participants the chance to discuss and learn about the most challenging questions in digital preservation, such as: how much digital preservation is enough or what’s an acceptable level of risk? There are no right or wrong answers, but this workshop will help the participants begin to find appropriate answers for their own organizational contexts and to learn in a friendly and collaborative environment.
