In this session we will screen a recording from iPRES 2024 in Ghent, Belgium on the Implications of Cloud Adoption for Digital Preservation. We will include the presentation File Fixity in the Cloud: Policy, Business, and Technical Consdierations by Kyle Rimkus, from Illinois University Library (who we hope will be able to join us live for a Q&A) and the panel session that followed with speakers from the National Library of the Netherlands, Royal Danish Library, TIB, Mid Sweden University, National Library New Zealand, The National Archives UK and Jisc.
The shift from storage managed on-premises into the cloud has caused many digital preservation repository managers to reevaluate their approach to guaranteeing file integrity. Most cloud storage vendors offer guarantees of file durability that call into question the need for continuous fixity checking as often performed by repositories with file servers located on-premises. At the same time, cloud vendors charge for bringing computational resources to bear on individual files, which can turn continuous fixity checking into a significant expense.
This paper explores one institution’s solution to verifying fixity in a repository of approximately seventeen million files after transition from on-site to cloud storage. It evaluates broader considerations for the field of digital preservation when considering file integrity in the cloud and concludes with an explanation of a local policy for ongoing fixity monitoring adapted to the affordances of a cloud-adapted architecture.

The DPC Community is guided by the values set out in our Strategic Plan and aims to be respectful, welcoming, inclusive and transparent. We encourage diversity in all its forms and are committed to being accessible to everyone who wishes to engage with the topic of digital preservation, whilst remaining technology and vendor neutral. We ask all those who are part of this community to be positive, accepting, and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others in alignment with our DPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy.
