With a long-standing alliance between the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and the International Council on Archives (ICA) already in place, the two organizations observe the signing of a Friendship Agreement today, at a joint webinar to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the ICA.
Acknowledging a desire to continue working collaboratively, the DPC and ICA will continue to participate towards the achievement of the following shared objectives:
-
A larger and more diverse global community of archivists and records managers engaged in the preservation of digital materials.
-
A global, national and institutional policy landscape which is more receptive to the preservation of digital archives.
-
A more skilled global workforce with competencies needed to preserve digital archives.
-
Deeper and more widely-shared understanding on the emerging and growing digital preservation challenge for archives.
“Digital preservation is all about collaboration, and collaboration has been a central pillar of a shared response to a shared global challenge,” explains William Kilbride, Executive Director of the DPC. “The DPC has enjoyed the benefits of international collaboration through our relationship with ICA a great deal over the years and this is an excellent opportunity to build on that previous work to further enrich the digital preservation community through our continued alliance.”
"Having an agreement with DPC is part of our ongoing efforts to act collectively and cooperatively so that our activities have a greater impact on society," says Carlos Serrano Vásquez, Executive Director of ICA. "ICA believes that only with these types of partnerships can we promote best practices and a continuous dialogue on issues relevant to the archival and records management sector."
In practice this means that the DPC and ICA will explore joint initiatives related to digital preservation that tackle significant topics relevant to both communities, as well as supporting each other in the creation and dissemination of resources for the use of archivists and digital preservation practitioners around the world.
The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
