Tyne & Wear Archives is an accredited joint service for the five Tyne and Wear councils and is based in Discovery Museum, Newcastle, one of the largest free museums in the north of England. Our collections are a typical mix of public authority and private material, but with particular strength in industrial heritage. We are a recognised ‘Place of Deposit’ for public records and our shipbuilding collections are designated as of national and international significance and were also added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World register in 2013. As more records are created in a digital only format, we need to put in place systems and processes that allow us to transfer them to the Archives and also to manage them effectively to ensure they remain accessible for future generations.
