The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the World Bank Group (WBG) Archives this week, as they become the Coalition’s newest Full Member.

With 189 member countries, the World Bank Group is a global partnership comprising five institutions working for sustainable solutions that reduce poverty and build shared prosperity in developing countries. The World Bank’s vision is to create a world free of poverty on a liveable planet.

Digital Preservation is a key component of the WBG Archives program – essential to the preservation of its born-digital records. As this program has matured, the Archives team also faces a major influx of additional materials to preserve while still navigating preservation of a backlog 50 TB of digital materials awaiting ingest into the digital preservation platform.

“The WBG Archives is proud to become a member of the DPC. To fulfil the WBG Archives’ mission to maintain the integrity of WBG records and provide secure storage for inactive records, digital preservation is a necessary step in the life cycle of digital WBG records with enduring value.  This requires a sustainable approach to digital preservation that is based on industry best practices,” says Jeanne Kramer-Smyth, WBG Digital Preservation Program Lead.

“We believe that joining the DPC will help us extend our connections in the digital preservation community and to leverage the skills and experience of that network in the pursuit of our digital preservation efforts.”

The WBG Archives joins the Coalition as the DPC is establishing its new DPC Americas program, led by newly appointed Anna Perricci. With key staff in Washington DC, the WBG Archives will benefit from the DPC Americas program which will support and expand the established and existing digital preservation community across the Americas; complementing, celebrating and sustaining their activities and amplifying them for the benefit of the DPC’s global membership.

Anna was delighted with the news saying: “I am thrilled to welcome the WBG Archives to the Coalition. As an international organisation with such an enormous impact and an exciting remit, they have a considerable task in managing the volumes of digital data generated by their operations across the globe. We look forward to working together to address the particular challenges associated with an organisation of this nature, and hope that by collaborating with WBG, the support offered by the DPC could potentially reach and benefit the organisations they work with too.”

As a Full Member of the DPC, WBG Archives will join the DPC Representative Council as well as the new Americas Stakeholder Group, formed as part the governance structure to ensure that Members in the region have the opportunity to inform the development of the DPC’s Americas program and have input to the broader strategic direction of the Coalition.

The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
