The biggest celebration of the year is happening in just four weeks from today: on Thursday 7th November it’s all about World Digital Preservation Day (#WDPD2024)!

World Digital Preservation Day is a great opportunity to raise global awareness for digital preservation and to connect the digital preservation community. Every year, on the first Thursday of November, we celebrate all things digital preservation and in 2024, we’re bringing a special focus on communities!

Through the theme 'Preserving Our Digital Content: Celebrating Communities’ we want to celebrate the diversity of the communities which surround and support us, whilst also drawing attention to the unique and valuable digital content which becomes their digital legacy.

Organized by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) and supported by digital preservation networks around the globe, WDPD2024 is open to participation from anyone interested in securing our digital legacy - across all sectors and geographic locations. We invite data creators, curators, consumers and community members from around the world to Celebrate Communities this World Digital Preservation Day by sharing their own digital preservation stories through blog posts, social media posts, events and creative activities.

Whether you organize a webinar, highlight the collections you are working on using social media, bake (or crochet!) an at-risk digital material or get together with your colleagues to tell them more about digital preservation: there are so many ways to participate in #WDPD2024!

Visit our webpages to be inspired by some of the awesome singer-songwriter actions from previous years, read last year’s amazing blogs, and make sure to use the WDPD 2024 logo in your own language to promote your event.

As part of the celebrations, the DPC is organizing a launch event in London for the Digital Preservation Toolkit for Community Archives.  This preservation toolkit is a brand-new resource, which has been created alongside the University of Glasgow as part of the Our Heritage, Our Stories (OHOS) project, and developed in collaboration with a range of community archives. It will include a range of practical guidance, support, and advice to those working with digital records in the community context.

To top it off, we will publish blogs from the DPC community all day long!

There is so much happening on World Digital Preservation Day, we can't wait to hear what YOU are organizing on 7th November! There’s a special page on the DPC website with all the events happening around the world. If you'd like your event to be listed on the DPC website too, please contact angela.puggioni@dpconline.org.

Stay tuned this week as we'll publish an event pack to prepare for your own event, including a #WDPD2024 themed background for your online events and a new edition of digital preservation bingo to get your event off to a good start.

World Digital Preservation Day is just one of the ways the DPC helps to raise awareness of the strategic, cultural, and technological issues which make up the digital preservation challenge. The DPC also supports members through other advocacy activities, workforce development, and partnerships, helping members to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services and derive enduring value from their digital collections.

For all the latest updates, visit the World Digital Preservation Day page on the DPC website, follow the hashtag #WDPD2024 on social media or contact angela.puggioni@dpconline.org for more details.
