Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) Archives has joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), becoming the Coalition’s newest Associate Member.
RTÉ Archives is home to Ireland’s largest collection of audiovisual material. The Archives are responsible for collecting, preserving and making accessible the creative and documentary output of the national broadcaster. Combining hundreds of thousands of hours of moving image and sound recordings together with significant collections of photographs, manuscripts and administrative documents, RTÉ Archives contain a unique record of Irish life.
“Digital preservation of audiovisual archives is an increasingly complex and dynamic function for broadcast archives. As a public service media organisation with collections dating back almost 100 years, the task of guaranteeing these and all future collections, for research, access and retrieval 100 years from now and beyond is significant," explains Bríd Dooley, Head of RTÉ Archives.
She continues: “RTÉ is investing significant resources and funding in digitising audio and audiovisual legacy assets as well as investing in new systems and preservation compliant storage for all RTE’s digital born archival assets. Joining the Digital Preservation Coalition therefore is a key opportunity for RTÉ, to gain from the expertise and support of the DPC in our work, to grow our knowledge and skillset, and to learn from and contribute to the growing global community of practice in this new emerging cultural heritage domain. We look forward to engaging with the team very much.”
Jane Winters, Chair of the DPC Board, welcomed RTÉ to the Coalition, saying: “We are delighted that RTÉ Archives has chosen to join the DPC. Its vast collection of broadcast material represents such an important piece of Ireland's cultural heritage. We look forward to working alongside RTÉ Archives, sharing knowledge and learning together as we safeguard our digital legacy.”
The DPC is an international charitable foundation which supports digital preservation, helping its members around the world to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services through community engagement, targeted advocacy work, training and workforce development, capacity building, good practice and standards, and through good management and governance. Its vision is a secure digital legacy.
