November 7th marks World Digital Preservation Day 2024
As we publish this message, it is 8am in New Zealand, and officially World Digital Preservation Day (WDPD2024)!
With the theme Preserving Our Digital Content: Celebrating Communities, WDPD2024 is a great opportunity to connect the digital preservation community, and to celebrate the digital legacy of all types of communities around the world.
“This year we’re bringing a special focus on communities,” says Sarah Middleton, Chief Community Officer for the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC). “Through this WDPD theme, we really want to raise the roof and celebrate the diversity of the communities which surround and support us, whilst also drawing attention to the unique and valuable digital content which becomes their digital legacy.”
Organized by the DPC and supported by digital preservation networks around the globe, World Digital Preservation Day - always on the first Thursday in November - is open to participation across all regions and sectors, from anyone interested in securing a sustainable future for our digital assets. Data creators, archivists, curators, consumers, and community members around the world are invited to showcase how their own activities contribute towards the digital preservation field through blog posts, social media posts, events and creative activities, sharing with the online community with the hashtag #WDPD2024. A list of global WDPD2024 events happening around the world is posted on the DPC website.
As part of the World Digital Preservation Day program, the DPC will celebrate the launch of the Community Archives Digital Preservation Toolkit at a special Launch Event at 10:30 AM UTC. Throughout the entire day, a flurry of blogs by our members will be published at regular and frequent intervals. We will also unveil additional translations of DPC resources. Check our news page and social media channels throughout the day for updates on these exciting releases and to follow the global celebration of digital preservation.
WDPD2024 is just one of the ways the Digital Preservation Coalition helps raise awareness of the global strategic, cultural and technological issues which make up the digital preservation challenge. The Coalition also supports its international members through other advocacy activities, workforce development, capacity-building and partnership; helping members to deliver resilient long-term access to digital content and services and derive enduring value from their digital collections.
Make sure to follow the hashtag #WDPD2024 on social media for updates throughout the day.
Happy World Digital Preservation Day!!
