The United States National Archives and Records Administration joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome the United States National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) as its newest associate member.

Based in Washington DC and with a dual mission to preserve and make available the permanent records of the government of the United States, NARA is custodian for physical and electronic federal records, with current electronic records comprising approximately 1.5 billion files.

The size of these holdings will increase dramatically after 2022, as new regulations require government agencies to stop transferring paper records and transfer born-digital or digitized records instead.

DPC launches Rapid Assessment Model (DPC RAM)

The Digital Preservation Coalition has launched its new maturity model, the DPC Rapid Assessment Model, at iPRES2019 in Amsterdam this week.

Designed to enable rapid benchmarking of an organization’s digital preservation capability, the DPC RAM is a digital preservation maturity modelling tool which aims to be applicable for organizations of any size in any sector, and for all content of long-term value. Developed in conjunction with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in the UK, and based on existing good practice, it is preservation strategy and solution agnostic, simple to understand and quick to apply.

DPC wins Best Poster Award at iPres2019 for Executive Guide on Digital Preservation

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) has been presented with the Jury's award for Best Poster at the international conference on digital preservation (iPRES 2019), in Amsterdam.

The winning poster presents the Executive Guide on Digital Preservation, a resource which provides practitioners with a combination of generic and specific messages and motivators designed to communicate with senior executives, legislators and budget holders, as well as decision and policy makers with a view to embedding the value of digital preservation at the core of every organization.

Sponsored by Data and Archiving Networked Services (DANS) and presented by their Deputy Director, Ingrid Dillo, the award recognizes the clear design, quality and creativity of the poster, and its supporting video.

The University of Westminster joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The University of Westminster becomes the latest organization to join the Digital Preservation Coalition.

The University of Westminster Records and Archives service manages the institutional records of the University and its predecessor bodies dating back to 1838. The archives include several deposited research collections, a garment collection and a small number of rare books. The integrated archives and records management environment supports an holistic approach to digital record-keeping from the point of creation as they collect and preserve records in order to make them accessible for use both now and in the future.

Yale University Library joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is delighted to welcome Yale University Library as its newest Full Member.

With a digital preservation program in progress since 2013, the Library has a large volume of digital assets to preserve and an active community of stakeholders who are invested in their long-term preservation.

The Library team is currently working to make emulation and software preservation ‘business as usual’ activities in which everyone doing digital preservation can easily participate, as well as considering plans to fund and grow future activities around research data preservation, and  managing challenges with automating preservation and maintaining access to research data.

The National Archives of Australia joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the National Archives of Australia, as they become its newest Associate member.

Collecting and preserving Australian Government records which reflect the country’s history and identity, the National Archives of Australia (NAA) is in a period of digital transformation. As part of this NAA is leading a whole-of-government approach to digital information governance that takes full effect in 2020, and are undertaking a phased, multi-year program to modernise its capabilities to embed secure digital end-to-end archival processes.

The DPC is partnering in a new project funded by Research England which has been set to help universities, researchers, libraries and publishers to make more, and better, use of open access book publishing. It will enable greater access to world-leading research and increase its impact.

BT joins the Digital Preservation Coalition as Associate Member

The DPC is delighted to announce that communications services provider BT has joined the Coalition as an Associate Member this month.

Preserving the history of BT and its predecessors, BT Heritage & Archives is the custodian of the Group’s corporate memory – both physical and digital. The Archive, which is recognised by UNESCO and Arts Council England as being of international importance, showcases Britain’s role in the development of telecommunications and the impact of the technology on society. Part of the digital collection includes digitised material available online - an extraordinary array of documents, images, plans, photographs and correspondence. There are also key digital records created by the company more recently that will enter the collection. These records chart innovations from the company’s recent past to today, such as the launch of the 5G network this year.
