Max Communications joins the DPC’s Supporter Program

A longstanding partner within the heritage sector, as well as local government, large media and publishing organizations, Max Communications’ core services include digitization of modern and historical documents, as well as tens of thousands of films, videos, and audio tapes every year.

Having provided digitization and archiving services for the last 20 years, Max Communications offers a range of Software as a Service (SaaS) including DRYAD and SOTERIA; a suite of Archive Management and Digital Preservation services built on AToM and Archivematica respectively.

COVID-19 Outbreak: DPC plans for face-to-face activities

Given the spread of COVID-19, the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is monitoring the advice from the World Health Organisation and guidance of Health Protection Scotland. As our work places particular emphasis on face-to-face activities and travel, we seek to minimize disruption to our work whilst safeguarding the health and wellbeing of participants and staff.

The situation is fluid and we will respond to guidance as it is updated. Therefore, our program, including face-to-face events, will proceed as advertised unless official advice suggests it would be unsafe to do so.

The University of Sydney joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

UOSyd bannerThe Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the University of Sydney Library this week, as they become the Coalition’s newest Associate member.

The Library was an early adopter of digital collections which has resulted in a continuously growing collection of digitised content with a particular focus on the Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections. The Library also manages university research outputs, research data and Higher Degree by Research theses through the institutional repository, Sydney eScholarship. The growing number of digitised and born-digital items in the Library’s collection has spurred the need to consider strategic digital preservation initiatives.

The Agency for Facility Operations of the Flemish Government joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The Agency for Facility Operations of the Flemish Government has joined the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) this month, becoming the Coalition’s newest Associate Member.

The Agency, which provides professional support to the entities of the Flemish government, is currently developing a shared digital archiving service - Digital Archives Flanders. This service is open to entities of the Flemish government and to its local authorities. Supporting this development, the Agency for Facility Operations provides the technical infrastructure, the software and the expertise with regard to the management, storage and preservation of born digital information from across the region.

DPC opens new office in Melbourne, Australia

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) has started 2020 with the opening of a new office, at the University of Melbourne. This presence will enable improved access to the DPC’s programme of activities for members and digital preservation practitioners across the southern hemisphere; helping support, represent and amplify the work of a very active digital preservation community in the region, as well as enabling institutions at all stages of maturity in the digital preservation journey.

The initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between DPC and the University of Melbourne, and the office will be staffed by Jaye Weatherburn who has been seconded to the DPC.

Amy Currie joins the DPC Staff as Training Officer

Amy currieThe Digital Preservation Coalition is delighted to welcome Amy Currie to its staff, in the role of Training Officer.

Amy will manage training and skills services for members, covering the work of Sharon McMeekin – the DPC’s Head of Workforce Development - as she delivers the Novice to Ninja project with colleagues from The UK National Archives.

“Amy will help us continue to provide opportunities for our members to acquire, develop and retain competent and responsive workforces that are ready to address the challenges of digital preservation,” explains Sharon. “We’re very pleased to have her on board!”

John McMillan joins the DPC Staff as Administration Officer

John McMillanThe Digital Preservation Coalition is delighted to welcome John McMillan to its staff, in the role of Administration Officer.

John brings with him considerable experience in managing business processes and communities having worked most recently for Xact Group and formerly for the Airdrie Savings Bank.

John will work with the whole team, across each of the DPC’s strategic objectives, to enable the smooth and efficient operation of this growing, strategically important and international membership organization.

The Library of Congress joins the Digital Preservation Coalition

The largest library in the world, with over 20 petabytes of digital material across its varied collections, the Library of Congress has extensive expert services and programs to preserve its digital content and make it available to a global user community. Set to continue growing in scope and scale, each year the Library adds hundreds of thousands of items totalling several hundred terabytes to its collections. The Library is also the main research arm of the U.S. Congress and the home of the U.S. Copyright Office.

DPC Technology Watch Report 'Preserving Email (2nd Ed)' by Christopher J Prom Now Openly Available

In celebration of World Digital Preservation Day 2019, it is our pleasure to announce the updated DPC Technology Watch Report ‘Preserving Email (2nd Edition)’ by Christopher J Prom is now open to the public.

Following on from the popular 2011 report and the successful Task Force on Technical Approaches for Email Archives, this report reviews the current state of email preservation and offers recommendations for information professionals (such as organizational leaders, records managers, IT professionals, librarians, archivists and curators) who seek to preserve email for its cultural, legal or administrative value.

Whatever choices that people and repositories make, this report describes the key policies, implementation strategies, procedures, tools, and services that can be drawn upon when developing an email preservation programme. Ultimately, it presents a hopeful message: by implementing appropriate technical standards, capture methods, and processing tools, every archivist, curator, records manager, or other information professional can take practical steps to preserve email for its legal, administrative, or historical value.

Australia’s Academic and Research Network becomes the Digital Preservation Coalition’s newest member

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) welcomes the Australia’s Academic and Research Network (AARNet) this week, as they become the Coalition’s 95th member.

AARNet is the architect, builder and operator of network infrastructure and an expanding portfolio of products and services, designed to meet the needs of over two million users in the research and education sector in Australia.

“We are keen to improve digital preservation literacy within our company, across member institutions, and more broadly within Australia’s research, education and cultural heritage domains,” explains Adam Bell, Cultural Outreach Manager for AARNet.
